Purpose:

Dianna Jo Bortz Vocal Music Scholarship – awarded to a student pursuing vocal music studies with a goal of teaching vocal music.  This scholarship is not intended for students planning on a career in vocal music performance.

Bernard Jay Bortz Male Teacher Role Model Scholarship – awarded to a male student pursuing a degree in education with a goal of becoming an elementary teacher (Middle and High School prospective teachers are also eligible to apply with a preference for elementary studies).

Jo Bortz was born September 26, 1941 as Dianna Jo Bender, the only child of her South Bend, Indiana parents. During her life she was always interested in fine vocal music having sung in her James Whitcomb Riley High School Glee Club in South Bend. She sang in a choral group while at Purdue University and from then on was always a part of excellent singing groups wherever she found herself. She sang alto with the Bach Festival Chorus in Kalamazoo for over ten years until her untimely death, December 10, 2010. The Bach Festival Chorus dedicated the Spring 2011 Mozart C Minor Mass to her memory.

Additionally she was a fantastic mother to three children, the grandmother of three; she became a much beloved step-mother/step grandmother as well. Later in her life she married Jay Bortz and they shared twenty years together. She is singing in Heaven this moment knowing that a scholarship has been established in her memory to assist young Allegan County students in their pursuit of a career in vocal fine arts. Mrs. Bortz lived her last eleven years in Allegan, MI.
